Throughput Rate Calculator
Throughput Rate Calculator
Throughput rate is the fundamental measure of production line speed - the basis for capacity planning, delivery commitments, and bottleneck identification.
Throughput Rate = Units Produced / Production Time
Example
480 units produced over an 8-hour shift:
Throughput Rate = 480/8 = 60 units/hour (1.0 units/minute)
Identifying Bottlenecks
In a multi-step production process, the station with the lowest throughput rate caps the throughput of the entire line, regardless of how fast every other station runs - this is why identifying and addressing the specific bottleneck station typically yields far more improvement than speeding up non-bottleneck stations.
Comparing to Takt Time
Comparing throughput rate against takt time (the production rate needed to exactly meet customer demand) reveals whether a line is currently over-capacity (producing faster than needed, tying up resources) or under-capacity (unable to keep up with demand) - a key input for both scheduling decisions and longer-term capacity planning.
