The Cushion: A Short History of Comfort

A throw pillow seems like a trivial thing, yet the cushion has a long pedigree as a marker of comfort, status, and even power. Soft furnishing was once a luxury few could afford, and the casual pillows tossed on a modern sofa are the democratic heirs of objects that once signaled rank.

Softness as Privilege

For much of history, seating was hard — benches, stools, and wooden chairs.
