Throw pillows that are too small for a large sofa look sparse and lost, while oversized pillows on a small loveseat can overwhelm the seating area - a simple proportion guideline scales the recommended pillow size to the sofa's own seat depth.
Worked example
For a sofa with a 40-inch seat depth:
Raw Size = 40 x 0.45 = 18 in
Nearest standard size = 18 in pillow
Pillow inserts are manufactured in fixed standard sizes (commonly 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 inches) - this calculator always rounds the proportional target to the closest size actually sold, since custom-cut inserts are far more expensive and harder to source than standard ones.
