Rug Size Calculator
The Floor Border Is the Design Decision That Sizes the Rug
Choosing a rug size isn't really about picking a number off a shelf tag — it's about deciding how much bare floor should show between the rug's edge and the walls. A commonly used design guideline calls for leaving 18 to 24 inches of exposed floor as a border, and once that border is set, it directly caps the largest rug dimensions the room can take before checking which standard size actually fits.
The Formula
The calculator computes the maximum rug length and width this way, then checks both orientations of each standard rug size against those maximums to find the largest one that fits.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Buying off-the-shelf instead of custom — standard rug sizes are far cheaper than custom cuts, so knowing which standard size fits your border preference avoids an unnecessary custom order.
- Open floor plans — a living/dining combo space benefits from a rug sized to visually anchor furniture groupings without touching the walls at all.
- Layered rug looks — a smaller accent rug over a larger jute or sisal base rug requires calculating the outer rug's size first, then sizing the inner rug to it.
- Room-to-room consistency — using the same border preference across multiple rooms produces a visually consistent proportion throughout a home, even as room sizes vary.
Recommended Standard Rug Size by Room
Using the default 24-inch border on all sides:
| Room size | Max rug dimensions | Recommended standard size |
|---|---|---|
| 10 ft × 12 ft | 6 ft × 8 ft | 5 ft × 8 ft |
| 12 ft × 14 ft | 8 ft × 10 ft | 8 ft × 10 ft |
| 14 ft × 16 ft | 10 ft × 12 ft | 9 ft × 12 ft |
| 16 ft × 20 ft | 12 ft × 16 ft | 12 ft × 15 ft |
Standard sizes checked include 4x6, 5x7, 5x8, 6x9, 8x10, 9x12, 10x13, 10x14, and 12x15 ft, in either orientation — if none fits within your border, the calculator recommends a custom size instead.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Room Length and Room Width (ft).
- Adjust the Desired Floor Border if you want more or less exposed floor than the 24-inch default.
- Select Calculate to see the maximum rug dimensions and the largest standard size that fits within them.
