Even Gaps Are What Make a Gallery Wall Read as Intentional
A row of framed pieces hung with inconsistent spacing looks accidental no matter how good the individual art is — the eye immediately picks up on uneven gaps. Solving for equal spacing across an entire wall, including the margins at each end, is simple arithmetic once you know the wall width and the combined width of every piece going up.
The Formula
Adding 1 to the piece count accounts for the two outer margins in addition to the gaps between pieces, producing evenly spaced art with balanced breathing room on both ends of the wall.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Gallery walls with mixed frame sizes — when pieces aren't uniform width, this formula still produces equal gaps by working from the sum of all widths rather than assuming identical pieces.
- Hallways and stairwells — long, narrow walls are common gallery locations, and getting the spacing right matters even more where the eye travels the length of the wall.
- Planning before drilling — calculating exact gap widths in advance means marking hanging points once, rather than eyeballing and adjusting holes after the fact.
- Above-furniture placement — a grouping hung above a sofa or console benefits from margins proportional to the furniture width below it, which this formula's outer-gap calculation supports directly.

A common gallery-wall guideline places the vertical center of the grouping at eye level, roughly 57–60 in from the floor.
