Wallpaper Roll Calculator

Why wallpaper needs a waste buffer

Unlike paint, wallpaper cannot simply be measured out to the exact square footage needed - pattern repeats, trimming at ceiling and floor lines, and matching seams between strips all consume extra material beyond the raw wall area.

Worked example

For 200 sq ft of wall using rolls that are 20.5in wide and 33ft long, with a 15% waste allowance:

Roll Coverage = (20.5/12) x 33 = 56.4 sq ft

Adjusted Area = 200 x 1.15 = 230 sq ft

Rolls Needed = ceil(230 / 56.4) = 5 rolls

Pattern TypeRecommended Waste Allowance
Plain or textured, no repeat10%
Small pattern repeat15%
Large pattern repeat (12in+)20-25%

Always buy all rolls from the same dye lot when possible, since slight color variations between production runs can become visible once hung side by side.
