Closet Rod Length Calculator
Planning closet space around what you actually own
Closet rod length is easy to underestimate, since a hanger's physical width is often much less than the actual space a garment takes up once it is loaded onto that hanger with some breathing room.
Worked example
For 40 garments averaging 1.25 inches of hanging space each:
Rod Length = 40 x 1.25 = 50 in
| Garment Type | Typical Space Needed |
|---|---|
| Shirts, folded pants | 1 - 1.5 in |
| Dresses, skirts | 2 - 3 in |
| Coats, bulky outerwear | 3 - 4 in |
If a closet holds a mix of garment types, calculate each category separately using its own typical spacing, then add the results together for the most accurate total rod length.
