A quick proportion rule interior designers actually use

Picking a chandelier that fits a room's scale does not require complex math - a long-standing designer shortcut simply adds the room's length and width together (in feet) to get the recommended fixture diameter in inches.

Worked example

For a 14ft by 12ft room:

Diameter = 14 + 12 = 26 in

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for dining tables specifically? For a fixture centered over a dining table, also check that its diameter stays about 12 inches narrower than the table width - a fixture too close to the table's edge width can visually overwhelm the table below it.

What about ceiling height? This calculator addresses horizontal proportion only. A separate common guideline suggests roughly 2.5-3 inches of fixture height for every foot of ceiling height, hung so the bottom sits 30-34 inches above a dining table surface.
