Pile carpet weaving is ancient. The oldest known knotted-pile carpet, preserved for millennia in the frozen ground of a Siberian burial, already shows sophisticated design and dense knotting — proof that the technique was mature long before recorded history. From the start, the rug was both a functional floor covering and an art form worth burying with the honored dead.

A hand-knotted rug is built one tiny knot at a time, each tied around the warp threads and trimmed to form the pile.
