The Board That Replaced Plaster: How Drywall Conquered the Wall

The plain gray sheets that form nearly every modern interior wall represent a quiet revolution in building. Drywall — gypsum pressed between paper — swept away a slow, skilled, centuries-old craft and replaced it with something a couple of workers could hang in an afternoon. Its rise reshaped how quickly and cheaply homes could be built.

The Age of Lath and Plaster

For centuries, interior walls were built by hand in wet plaster. Workers nailed up thin wooden strips — lath — then troweled on multiple coats of plaster, each needing time to dry before the next. It was skilled, slow, messy work, and a plasterer's craft took years to master. A single room's walls could take days and demanded an expert hand.

Gypsum in a Sandwich

Drywall's key material is gypsum, a soft mineral that, when heated and rehydrated, sets into a hard, fire-resistant solid. The innovation was to cast a panel of gypsum between two sheets of paper at a factory, producing a rigid board ready to hang. All the wet, slow work happened in the plant; on site, the board simply needed cutting and fastening.

The Wartime Accelerator

Drywall's adoption accelerated when speed and economy became paramount, notably during wartime building booms when housing had to go up fast and cheap. Its name captures its whole appeal: a “dry” wall, needing none of the drying time wet plaster demanded. What had taken a skilled crew days could now be done by a small team in hours.

Seams: The Remaining Craft

Drywall did not eliminate finish work entirely — it concentrated it at the seams. The joints between boards must be taped and coated with compound, then sanded smooth, to hide the transitions. This is why larger sheets are valued: fewer sheets mean fewer seams to finish, and a smoother wall with less of the one skilled step drywall could not abolish.
