Ordering the right number of drywall sheets upfront saves an extra trip to the supplier mid-project - this calculator applies a standard waste allowance to your total wall area.

Sheets Needed = ceil((Wall Area x 1.1 waste factor) / Sheet Area)

Example

400 sq ft of wall area using 4' x 8' sheets:

Sheet Area = 32 sq ft → Sheets Needed = ceil((400 x 1.1) / 32) = 14 sheets

Why 10% Waste?

The 10% waste factor accounts for cuts around doors, windows, and electrical outlets, plus occasional breakage during handling and installation - drywall is surprisingly prone to corner damage and cracking during transport, so a modest buffer avoids running short partway through hanging a room.

Choosing Sheet Size

Standard drywall sheets come in several common sizes (4'x8', 4'x10', 4'x12') - larger sheets reduce the number of seams that need taping and mudding (fewer seams generally means a smoother finished wall), but require more people to handle safely during installation, especially on ceilings.
