Backsplash Tile Calculator
Tile Size Changes the Count More Than the Area Does
The same backsplash area needs a wildly different tile count depending on how big each tile is — a wall of 4x4 inch tile requires roughly nine times as many pieces as the identical wall in 12x12 inch tile, even though the covered square footage is unchanged. That difference matters directly for cost, since smaller tile usually means more grout lines, more labor, and more pieces to buy in the first place.
The Formula
Tile Area = (Tile Width × Tile Height) / 144
Tiles Needed = ceil((Backsplash Area × (1 + Waste%)) / Tile Area)
Tile dimensions are entered in inches and divided by 144 to convert to square feet, matching the backsplash area which is measured in feet.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Buying enough for cuts and breakage — the waste percentage accounts for tiles cut to fit edges, outlets, and corners, plus the occasional cracked piece.
- Ordering from the same production lot — like wallpaper, tile can vary slightly in shade between manufacturing batches, so buying the full amount upfront avoids a visible mismatch.
- Comparing tile sizes for a project — larger format tile reduces both the piece count and the number of grout lines, a factor worth weighing against per-tile cost.
- Estimating boxes to order — tile is typically boxed in fixed quantities; dividing the tile count by tiles-per-box and rounding up avoids an under-order that stalls the job.
Tiles Needed by Tile Size
For a 30 sq ft backsplash area already inclusive of waste allowance:
| Tile size | Tile area | Tiles needed |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in × 4 in | 0.111 sq ft | 270 |
| 3 in × 6 in (subway) | 0.125 sq ft | 240 |
| 6 in × 6 in | 0.250 sq ft | 120 |
| 12 in × 12 in | 1.000 sq ft | 30 |
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Backsplash Length and Height (ft).
- Enter Tile Width and Tile Height (in) for your chosen tile.
- Adjust Waste Percent if your layout needs more than the 10% default (complex patterns or diagonal layouts typically need more).
- Optionally enter Tiles per Box to see the number of boxes to order alongside the tile count.
- Select Calculate to see the tiles (and boxes, if applicable) needed.
