Roof Shingle Calculator

Roof Shingle Calculator

Roofing material is priced and sold in "squares" and "bundles" rather than plain square footage - this calculator converts your roof area into both units for accurate ordering.

Formula

Roofing Squares = (Roof Area x 1.1 waste factor) / 100 sq ft
Bundles Needed = Roofing Squares x 3 bundles per square

Example

A 2,000 sq ft roof:

Roofing Squares = (2,000 x 1.1) / 100 = 22.0 → 66 bundles

Why "Squares"?

One roofing square covers exactly 100 square feet of roof area - a standard unit used industry-wide for both material ordering and labor cost estimation. Standard asphalt shingles are typically packaged 3 bundles per square, making bundle count the actual purchasable unit at most roofing suppliers.

Complex Roofs Need More Waste Allowance

The 10% waste factor used here covers a typical roof's cuts at hips, valleys, ridges, and edges - but roofs with many dormers, multiple pitches, or intricate angles typically need a higher waste allowance (sometimes 15% or more) to account for the additional cutting and fitting those features require.
