Flooring Material Calculator

Flooring Material Calculator

Whether you're installing hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, or tile, this calculator converts room dimensions into a purchase-ready material quantity including standard waste.

Room Area = Length x Width
Material to Purchase = Room Area x 1.1 waste factor

Example

A 15 ft x 12 ft room:

Room Area = 180 sq ft → Material to Purchase = 198 sq ft

Why 10% Waste as the Baseline

This standard industry allowance covers cuts around room perimeters, closets, doorways, and obstacles, plus occasional damaged pieces discovered during installation. Simple rectangular rooms installed in a straight running pattern typically need only this baseline 10% allowance.

When to Increase the Waste Factor

Diagonal installation patterns, herringbone layouts, or rooms with many angles, alcoves, or irregular shapes typically need a higher waste factor - often 15-20% - since these patterns generate considerably more offcuts than a straight installation across a simple rectangular floor plan.
