The floor is the surface we touch most and notice least, and its evolution from bare earth to engineered planks tracks the rise of comfort itself. From Earth to Boards

The earliest floors were simply the ground — packed earth, sometimes strewn with rushes or straw that could be swept out and replaced. Wooden floors were a step up in comfort and cleanliness, but early plank floors were rough, wide, and costly, a feature of grander homes. A smooth, finished wooden floor was long a marker of status.

The Craft of the Hardwood Floor

As milling improved, narrow strips of hardwood could be cut, fitted tightly with tongue-and-groove edges, and nailed down to form the smooth, durable floors prized for generations. Elaborate parquet — small pieces arranged in geometric patterns — turned the floor into a work of craftsmanship. A well-laid hardwood floor became both a practical surface and a display of skill.

The Floating Floor

A modern innovation transformed installation: the floating floor. Instead of nailing or gluing each piece down, planks lock to one another and rest freely over the subfloor, held in place by their own interlocked weight. Laminate, engineered wood, and luxury vinyl plank use this system, letting the whole floor expand and contract as one and putting installation within reach of ordinary homeowners.

Why Waste Depends on Pattern

Whatever the material, fitting a rigid floor to a real room means cutting pieces at every wall, closet, and doorway, and each cut leaves an offcut that may be unusable. Simple straight layouts waste little; diagonal or herringbone patterns generate far more offcuts and demand a larger allowance.
