Countertop Calculator
The Edge Profile Is Its Own Line Item
Countertop quotes are frequently misread because the headline per-square-foot price only covers the flat slab material — edge treatments (bullnose, ogee, waterfall) are priced separately by the linear foot, and fabrication or installation is often a flat fee on top of both. A calculator that lumps everything into one square-footage number will consistently undershoot the real bid.
The Formula
Total Cost = (Area × Cost per sq ft) + (Edge Length × Edge Cost per ft) + Fabrication Fee
Where This Calculation Matters
- Comparing material tiers — laminate, quartz, and natural stone occupy very different price bands per square foot; isolating that variable from edge and fabrication costs shows the true material premium.
- Budgeting an L-shaped or island layout — edge length often exceeds what a simple perimeter calculation suggests once inside corners and an island's exposed sides are counted.
- Understanding fabrication as a fixed cost — cutting sink and cooktop openings, plus template and installation, is frequently billed as a flat fee independent of slab size, which matters more on smaller countertops as a share of total cost.
- Negotiating a quote — breaking a bundled bid into its component parts makes it possible to ask specifically where a number seems high.
How Material Grade Changes the Total
For a 10 ft × 2.5 ft (25 sq ft) countertop with 15 ft of edge treatment at $12/ft and a $300 fabrication fee:
| Material cost/sq ft | Material cost | Total (incl. edge & fabrication) |
|---|---|---|
| $25 (laminate range) | $625.00 | $1,105.00 |
| $45 (mid-range quartz/granite) | $1,125.00 | $1,605.00 |
| $70 (premium quartz/granite) | $1,750.00 | $2,230.00 |
| $100 (high-end stone) | $2,500.00 | $2,980.00 |
Edge treatment ($180) and fabrication ($300) stay fixed at $480 combined in this example regardless of material tier — a larger share of the total on the cheapest material, a smaller share on the most expensive.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Countertop Length and Width (ft).
- Enter the Material Cost per sq ft for your chosen countertop material.
- Enter Edge Treatment Length and Cost per ft if you're adding a specific edge profile.
- Enter a Fabrication/Installation Fee if quoted separately.
- Select Calculate to see the total estimated cost.
