The fluid circulating through an air conditioner has a turbulent history that reaches from deadly early chemicals to a hole in the sky and a landmark global treaty. Dangerous Beginnings

Early mechanical refrigeration relied on refrigerants that were toxic or flammable — ammonia, sulfur dioxide, methyl chloride — and leaks could sicken or kill. Refrigeration worked, but living with these fluids was risky, and household cooling could not spread safely until a better refrigerant was found. The industry needed something that cooled well without poisoning the people it served.

The Miracle That Wasn't

In the early twentieth century, chemists developed chlorofluorocarbons — CFCs, sold under names like Freon — that seemed perfect: stable, non-toxic, non-flammable. They made refrigerators and air conditioners safe for the home and were hailed as a triumph of chemistry. Their very stability, however, hid a fatal flaw that would take decades to reveal itself.

A Hole in the Sky

In the 1970s and 80s scientists discovered that CFCs, drifting intact into the upper atmosphere, were destroying the ozone layer that shields Earth from ultraviolet radiation — opening a seasonal “ozone hole” over the poles. The stability that made CFCs safe indoors let them survive long enough to reach the stratosphere and wreak havoc there.

The Treaty That Worked

The response was the Montreal Protocol, a global agreement to phase out ozone-depleting refrigerants — widely regarded as the most successful environmental treaty ever, with the ozone layer now slowly healing. The industry moved to HCFCs and HFCs, and as those proved to be strong greenhouse gases, to newer low-impact refrigerants. The refrigerant in a modern system is a product of this ongoing, hard-won environmental reckoning.
