Sizing Before You Buy

An oversized air conditioner cools a room quickly but cycles on and off so often it never properly removes humidity; an undersized one runs constantly and still can't keep up on the hottest afternoon. Both problems trace back to the same root cause — skipping a proper load calculation before equipment gets selected. This calculator applies a simplified Manual-J-style method to estimate the total cooling and heating load for a space.

The Formula

Base Load = Area × Climate Factor × (Ceiling Height / 8) × Insulation Multiplier
Total Load = Base Load + (Occupants × 400) + (Windows × 1000)

Climate factor runs from 20 BTU/sq ft in cold climates up to 30 in hot ones; insulation multiplier ranges from 0.85 for good insulation to 1.2 for poor. Each occupant adds a fixed 400 BTU/hr for body heat, and each window adds 1,000 BTU/hr for solar and conductive gain.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • New system selection — matching equipment tonnage to the space instead of relying on a contractor's rule-of-thumb square footage guess.
  • Additions and renovations — checking whether an existing system has spare capacity before finishing a basement or adding a room.
  • Comparing insulation upgrades — seeing how much load (and therefore equipment size) drops when moving from poor to good insulation.
  • Pre-quote budgeting — having a ballpark tonnage before a contractor visit makes it easier to sanity-check their proposal.
