A Higher SEER Number Means Less Electricity for the Same Cooling

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how much cooling a system delivers per unit of electricity consumed over a season — the higher the number, the less it costs to produce the same BTU of cooling. Replacing an aging 10-SEER system with a modern 16-SEER unit doesn't change how cold the house gets, only how much the utility bill costs to get there. This calculator converts that efficiency difference into an actual annual dollar figure.

The Formula

Annual Energy (kWh) = (Cooling Load × Hours per Year) / (SEER × 1000)
Annual Cost = Annual Energy × Electricity Rate

The calculation runs once for the old system's SEER and once for the new system's SEER, using the same cooling load and annual run hours for both, then compares the resulting costs.
