The Pouch Is Two Films and a Glue That Waits
A laminating pouch is two layers of clear plastic film, joined along one edge, with the inner faces coated in a special adhesive. Crucially, that adhesive is inert at room temperature, it does nothing until heated. This is a thermal adhesive: a polymer designed to soften and become sticky at a specific temperature and then re-solidify. The pouch can sit on a shelf indefinitely with the glue dormant, waiting for heat to activate it.
What the Heat Does
Running the pouch through a laminator's heated rollers raises the adhesive past its activation temperature, and it flows. The molten polymer wets the surface of the paper and the opposing film, seeping into the paper's fibers and bridging the two plastic layers. As the sandwich cools, the adhesive solidifies, locking everything together. The document is now encapsulated, sealed within a continuous plastic envelope bonded on both faces and, where the films meet beyond the paper's edge, fused directly to each other.

Why the Border Is Essential
Now the border makes sense. The strongest, most durable seal forms where the two films fuse directly to each other, plastic to plastic, in the margin beyond the paper. If the document runs to the very edge, there is no film-to-film border, and the seal can peel or moisture can creep in along the exposed paper edge. Laminate too close to the edge and you cut into that protective seal.
Why Encapsulation Protects
The finished plastic shell protects because it is a barrier. It keeps out water and grease, resists tearing and creasing, and shields the printed surface from abrasion and fingerprints, all functions of the polymer film's physical toughness and impermeability. This is why laminated menus, ID cards, and signs survive handling that would destroy bare paper. The calculator's border is the small price of a complete seal: without that fused frame, the barrier has a gap, and a barrier with a gap is no barrier at all. Because standard pouches come in fixed sizes, rounding the calculated minimum up to the next stock size is the practical final step.
