Can Heat Be Measured?
Before calorimetry, heat was understood only qualitatively — things were hot or cold. The revolutionary step was to quantify heat: to say precisely how much a given process released. This required a method to capture heat and read off its amount, turning an intuition into a measurement and making the energy of combustion a definite, comparable number.
The Ice Calorimeter
Antoine Lavoisier, with the mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace, devised an ingenious answer: an ice calorimeter. By placing a heat source within a chamber packed with ice and measuring the water produced as the ice melted, they could determine how much heat had been released — since melting a known amount of ice requires a known amount of heat. Heat had been measured by its effect.

Higher and Lower Values
Burning fuel produces water vapor, and that vapor carries latent heat. The higher heating value assumes this vapor condenses back to liquid, releasing and counting its latent heat — the gross total energy. It is the fuller measure of a fuel's energy content, the ceiling of what burning it could yield if every last bit of heat, including the water's, were recovered.
Estimating From Composition
Where measurement is impractical, a fuel's heating value can be estimated from its elemental makeup — the proportions of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur — using empirical formulas built from countless calorimeter measurements. These formulas encode Lavoisier's legacy: because heat was made measurable, the energy locked in a fuel can now be predicted from chemistry alone.
