A fuel's lower heating value assumes the water vapor made by combustion drifts away with the exhaust, its latent heat uncaptured. That assumption matches how nearly all combustion equipment behaves — but a clever class of condensing appliances defies it, recovering the very heat the lower value writes off.

Where the Water Comes From

Burning any fuel containing hydrogen produces water. The hydrogen in the fuel combines with oxygen to form water vapor, which mixes into the hot flue gas. This water carries latent heat — the energy that was needed to vaporize it — and whether that heat is recovered or lost defines the difference between a fuel's higher and lower heating values.

Why Most Equipment Loses It

In ordinary combustion equipment, the flue gas is far too hot for its water vapor to condense; the moisture leaves as vapor, taking its latent heat up the chimney. This is why the lower heating value — which excludes that recoverable latent heat — represents what most real equipment actually delivers. The higher value's extra energy simply escapes, invisibly, as warm vapor.

The Condensing Trick

A condensing appliance cools its flue gas below the dew point, so the water vapor condenses back to liquid inside the unit, releasing its latent heat to be captured and used. By recovering what conventional equipment throws away, condensing boilers and furnaces reach efficiencies that seem to exceed one hundred percent when reckoned against the lower heating value — because they are cashing in the higher value's hidden bonus.

The Acid Catch

Recovering that heat comes with a challenge: the condensed water is mildly acidic, formed as flue gases dissolve into it, so condensing equipment must be built of corrosion-resistant materials and drain the condensate safely. The engineering to survive its own recovered moisture is the price of reclaiming the latent heat — a worthwhile trade that lower-heating-value math helps quantify.
