The Problem of the Muddy Road
For most of history, roads were miserable — dust in dry weather, bottomless mud in wet, rutted by every cart. Early attempts to fix them relied on massive stone foundations that were slow and costly to build. The challenge was to make a road that could carry heavy loads, drain water, and be built and maintained affordably.
McAdam's Insight
In the early nineteenth century John Loudon McAdam offered a radical solution: skip the heavy foundation. He showed that a road of compacted layers of small, angular broken stone, raised for drainage, could carry traffic if the stones were the right size and well compacted. The interlocking stones distributed loads and, crucially, the surface shed water. This “macadam” road was cheaper, faster, and better than what came before.

Spreading the Load
The genius of a stone road is how it carries weight. A wheel pressing on the surface does not bear straight down on one point of soft ground; the compacted, interlocked stone spreads that load outward over a wide area of the earth below, keeping the pressure on the soil low enough that it does not sink. Depth, Compaction, and Density
A lasting gravel drive needs adequate depth of stone, proper compaction, and drainage — the same lessons McAdam taught.
