The United States is the conspicuous exception, continuing to run daily commerce on customary units, pounds, inches, and the basis-weight paper system, even as its science and much of its industry use metric. The reasons are inertia and cost: an enormous installed base of tools, standards, habits, and infrastructure built around the old units, which would be expensive and disruptive to convert wholesale. So paper in North America is still sold by the pound-per-ream convention, and the rest of the world by GSM, and the twain must be translated.
