There is a remarkably consistent relationship between how much weight you can lift once and how many times you can lift a lighter load. This link between strength and endurance lets a lifter estimate their absolute maximum without the risk of actually testing it — and it reveals something deep about how muscles produce force.

The Strength-Endurance Continuum

A muscle's capacity spans a continuum: at one end, a single maximal effort against a heavy load; at the other, many repetitions against a light one. These are not separate abilities but two ends of the same curve. The heavier the weight, the fewer reps possible — and the relationship is regular enough that one point on the curve predicts the rest.

Predicting the Max

This regularity is why a lifter can estimate their one-rep max from a lighter set. Perform, say, five reps at a given weight, and established formulas extrapolate what a single all-out rep would likely be. The formulas differ slightly in how they curve, but all rest on the same documented relationship between reps completed and the fraction of maximum strength being used.

Why Estimate Instead of Test

Testing a true one-rep max means loading a bar heavy enough that failure risks injury, and it leaves a lifter deeply fatigued. Estimating from a safer, submaximal set avoids both. It also lets strength be tracked from ordinary training sets, without a dedicated, draining max-out session — making the estimate not just safer but more practical for everyday progress monitoring.

The Foundation of Programming

The estimated maximum is the cornerstone of strength programming, because most training plans prescribe work as a percentage of it — heavy triples at one percentage, higher-rep sets at another.
