Adaptation to Stress
The body is a machine for adapting to demand. Stress a muscle with a load beyond its comfort, and in recovery it rebuilds slightly stronger, ready for that load next time. This adaptation is the engine of all fitness gains. But it only happens when the demand exceeds what the body has already adapted to — doing the same thing forever brings no further change.
Progressive Overload
To keep adapting, the demand must keep rising — progressive overload. As a muscle grows stronger, yesterday's challenging load becomes easy, and the stimulus must increase to drive further growth. This gradual, continual increase in demand is the cornerstone of every effective strength program: always asking a little more than before, so the body always has a reason to adapt.
