The Hidden Math: Order Statistics

Risk does not compare dice at random. Each side sorts its dice highest to lowest, then compares the highest against the highest and the second-highest against the second-highest. Comparing sorted values is exactly what mathematicians call order statistics, the study of ranked outcomes rather than raw ones. This is why rolling more dice helps: it is not just more numbers, it raises your highest die, and the highest die is what gets compared first. Three attacking dice give three chances for a big number, of which only the top two are used.

The Defender's Quiet Edge

The rule that the defender wins ties looks minor and is anything but. On every single comparison, the attacker must strictly beat the defender; a tie goes to the defense.

That is why even a two-versus-two clash, with the same number of dice on each side, favors the defender on average. The tie rule is a small thumb on the scale applied to every comparison.

One Roll Versus the Whole War

The calculator reports a single exchange, but real battles continue roll after roll until one side is wiped out. Over a full assault the picture shifts: an attacker who commits a large stack against a small defending force will usually win the territory, because they keep rolling three dice while the defender's pool shrinks. The per-roll edge favors the defender, but a big enough attacking army overwhelms that edge through sheer attrition. The art is knowing when your stack is large enough to expect victory and when you are feeding units into a meat grinder.

The Practical Heuristics

Seasoned players lean on rules of thumb the numbers support: always attack with the maximum three dice when you can (it maximizes your top-two order statistics); a rough guideline is that you want a meaningful numerical advantage before assaulting a defended territory; and defending a border with at least two units to roll two dice is far stronger than leaving a lone defender. Each of these is the order-statistics math turned into table sense.

Using the Odds Well

Take the calculator's per-exchange losses as exact, then think one level up: a single roll usually favors the defender, but a full assault favors a sufficiently large attacker.
