The diesel engine powers trucks, ships, trains, and generators across the world, prized for its efficiency and endurance. A More Efficient Engine

In the late nineteenth century, Rudolf Diesel set out to build a more efficient engine than those of his day. His insight was to ignite fuel not with a spark but by the intense heat of highly compressed air — compression ignition. Squeezing air until it grows hot enough to ignite injected fuel, his engine extracted more useful work from each unit of fuel than its rivals.

Compression Ignition

This is the essence of the diesel engine and what distinguishes it from a gasoline engine. There is no spark plug; the air is compressed so tightly that it heats up on its own, and fuel sprayed into it ignites from that heat alone. The higher compression is precisely why diesel engines are more efficient, converting a greater share of fuel energy into motion.

The Workhorse Fuel
