The modern era began with Portland cement, a finely ground powder that, mixed with water, binds sand and stone into concrete. Curing, Not Drying
The great misconception is that concrete hardens by drying out. In fact it cures through hydration — a chemical reaction between cement and water that grows interlocking crystals binding everything into stone. This is why concrete can set underwater and why it must be kept damp, not dried, as it cures: removing water too soon starves the reaction and weakens the result.
