Instinct says a steeper drain must always be better, water runs away faster, so it should clear waste more effectively. It is wrong. A drain that is too steep clogs just as surely as one that is too flat, and the reason lies in a subtle principle sanitary engineers call self-cleansing velocity.
Drains Carry Two Things at Once
Unlike a pressurized supply pipe, a drain relies on gravity and carries a mixture: liquid, and the solids suspended in it. The whole trick of a working drain is keeping the solids moving along with the liquid, so nothing gets left behind. This requires the water to flow at a particular speed, fast enough to sweep solids along, but not so fast that the liquid abandons them. The slope is simply the control knob that sets this flow speed.
Too Flat: The Solids Settle
With too little slope, the water moves sluggishly. At low velocity, the flow lacks the energy to keep solids in suspension, and they settle out and accumulate on the pipe bottom, building up until they form a clog. This is the failure everyone expects, a lazy drain that silts up. It is why the calculator specifies a minimum slope: below it, the water simply cannot carry its load.

Too Steep: The Water Runs Away From the Waste
The surprising failure is the opposite one. On too steep a slope, the liquid races down the pipe and drains away faster than it can carry the solids with it. The water outruns the very material it is supposed to transport, leaving solids stranded on the pipe walls to dry out and accumulate. A too-steep drain can therefore clog just like a too-flat one, not because water moves too slowly, but because it separates from its cargo. This is why the calculator does not simply maximize the fall.
Why Smaller Pipes Need More Slope
The calculator's rule that smaller pipes need steeper slope follows from the same principle. A smaller pipe carries less water, and that smaller volume of flow needs a bit more steepness to reach the self-cleansing velocity that keeps solids moving. Larger pipes carry more water with more carrying power, so they can achieve self-cleansing flow at a gentler slope.
