The Week Has No Astronomical Basis
The day is the Earth's rotation, the month roughly the moon's cycle, the year the Earth's orbit, each a natural astronomical period. The seven-day week is the exception: nothing in the heavens takes seven days. It is a purely human, cultural invention, and a remarkably durable one, having been adopted worldwide despite fitting no natural rhythm. A year is not a whole number of weeks, it is fifty-two weeks and a day, or two in a leap year, so the day of the week that a given date falls on drifts forward each year. Months do not contain a whole number of weeks either. This means weeks and the calendar are perpetually out of step, and any attempt to number the weeks of a year runs into the problem that the first and last weeks straddle the year boundary. There is no natural way to say which week a January or December date belongs to, so a rule must be imposed.
Why Numbering Systems Disagree
Because the boundary is arbitrary, different conventions draw it differently, and the same date can have different week numbers under different systems. The ISO standard, common internationally, defines week 1 as the week containing the year's first Thursday, with weeks running Monday to Sunday, which is why some early-January days belong to the previous year's final week and some years have a fifty-third week. Other conventions, common in North America, may start weeks on Sunday and define week 1 as the one containing January 1, giving different numbers.
