Week Number Calculator

Week 1 Doesn't Always Start on January 1

Under the ISO 8601 standard, week numbering is anchored to Thursdays, not to the first of January. Week 1 of any year is defined as the week containing that year's first Thursday, with weeks running Monday through Sunday. The practical effect is that the first few days of January sometimes belong to the last week of the previous year, and some years even acquire a 53rd week. This calculator returns the correct ISO week number and week-numbering year for any date.

The Logic

Week 1 = the week (Mon–Sun) containing the year's first Thursday

Equivalently: if January 1st falls on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it belongs to the final week of the prior year rather than week 1 of the new year.

Edge Cases Worth Knowing

January 1, 2023SundayWeek 52 of 2022
January 1, 2024MondayWeek 1 of 2024
January 1, 2025WednesdayWeek 1 of 2025
January 1, 2026ThursdayWeek 1 of 2026
December 31, 2020ThursdayWeek 53 of 2020

2020 is a rare example of a year with a 53rd ISO week, since December 31, 2020 fell on a Thursday — putting it in a new week that still belongs to 2020's numbering.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Business and manufacturing planning — many organizations schedule production runs, payroll cycles, or reporting periods by week number rather than by calendar date.
  • Project management software — sprint planning and Gantt charts frequently reference "Week 23" style labels that need to match the ISO standard to stay consistent across tools.
  • Cross-referencing international data — ISO week numbering is the standard used across most of Europe, so aligning with it matters when comparing data sourced internationally.
