How Speedometers Became Foolable: A Short History

For most of the twentieth century, cars used a mechanical eddy-current speedometer. A cable driven off the transmission spun a small magnet inside a metal cup; the spinning magnet dragged the cup around against a hairspring, and the faster the spin, the farther the needle deflected. Crucially, that whole system was geared to one assumed tire size - baked in mechanically at the factory - so a tire change silently falsified every reading with no way for the device to know.

Modern vehicles replaced the cable with an electronic vehicle speed sensor that counts pulses from a toothed ring on a rotating shaft or wheel, feeding a signal the car's computer converts to speed and distance. The advantage is that the conversion is now a software constant rather than a fixed gear - which is exactly why an electronic speedometer can be recalibrated for a non-stock tire size, through the factory tool or an aftermarket module, where a cable-driven one required physically swapping a gear.
