Why bigger tires make your speedometer lie
A speedometer doesn't measure road speed directly - it counts wheel rotations and converts that to a speed reading using the vehicle's original tire circumference. Change tire diameter without recalibrating, and the speedometer keeps using the old assumption.
Worked example
For a vehicle originally on 27-inch diameter tires, upgraded to 29-inch tires, showing 65 mph on the speedometer:
Actual Speed = 65 x (29 / 27) = 69.81 mph actual (7.41% speedometer error)
Larger tires cover more ground per rotation than the speedometer assumes, so it reads slower than actual speed - this means your true speed is higher than displayed, which matters for both safety and staying within posted speed limits. Smaller tires cause the opposite error, with the speedometer reading faster than actual speed.
Many aftermarket gauge clusters or tuning modules can be recalibrated to correct for a tire size change - check with your vehicle's manufacturer or a qualified shop if you plan to run non-stock tire sizes long-term.
