How manufacturers arrive at engine size figures

Engine displacement - the number behind names like "2.0L" or "5.7L" - is simply the total volume swept by all pistons moving from bottom dead center to top dead center in one stroke, calculated directly from each cylinder's bore and stroke dimensions.

Worked example

For an engine with an 86mm bore, 86mm stroke, and 4 cylinders:

Displacement = (π/4) x 8.6² x 8.6 x 4 = 1998.2 cc (1.998 L)

Frequently asked questions

Why does this match real 2.0L engines exactly? An 86mm x 86mm bore and stroke across 4 cylinders is a genuinely common "square" engine configuration (bore equals stroke) used by several real production 2.0L engines, which is why this worked example lands almost exactly on 2.0 liters.

Does higher displacement always mean more power? Not necessarily - displacement correlates strongly with potential power output, but forced induction (turbocharging/supercharging), compression ratio, valve timing, and other design factors mean two engines of identical displacement can produce very different horsepower figures.
