Reading the Rock Record: Steno and the Layers of Time

A cliff of layered rock is a book written in stone, its pages stacked in order of age. Learning to read that book — to know that lower layers are older, that each was once flat, that they record a sequence of events — was a revolutionary insight. It came from a seventeenth-century thinker named Nicolas Steno, and it founded the science of stratigraphy.

Layers as Pages

Sedimentary rocks form as sediment settles and hardens, layer upon layer, over vast spans of time. Each layer, or stratum, is a page recording the conditions when it formed — a sea, a desert, a river delta. Read in order, the stack tells a story of changing environments across immense time. Stratigraphy is the discipline of reading that story.

Steno's Principles

Nicolas Steno articulated the founding rules. The principle of superposition holds that in an undisturbed sequence, lower layers are older than those above. The principle of original horizontality holds that layers are laid down flat, so any tilting or folding happened afterward. These simple ideas gave geologists a way to establish the order of past events from rock alone.

When the Pages Are Tilted

Because layers begin flat but are later tilted and folded by Earth's forces, a geologist measuring a bed in the field must account for its dip. A measurement straight down through a tilted layer overstates its true thickness — the more steeply the bed dips, the greater the exaggeration. Building the Column

By measuring the true thickness of each layer and stacking them in order, geologists build a stratigraphic column — a reconstructed sequence of a region's rock history. From these columns, correlated across the world, the entire geologic timescale was assembled.
