He reportedly stayed up much of the night working it out, and by morning had produced the first genetic map — a founding achievement of modern genetics.
The Fly Room
The setting was Thomas Hunt Morgan's laboratory, the legendary “fly room,” where researchers bred fruit flies by the thousands to study inheritance. Flies were ideal — cheap, fast-breeding, with easily tracked traits — and the crosses generated mountains of data on how traits were inherited together or apart. Within that data lay a hidden map, waiting to be read.
Genes That Travel Together
Morgan's team noticed that some traits tended to be inherited together, as if linked. The explanation was that their genes sat on the same chromosome. But the linkage was not absolute — sometimes the traits separated, because chromosomes exchange segments during the formation of reproductive cells, a process called crossing over or recombination.

Distance as Frequency
The undergraduate, Alfred Sturtevant, grasped the key insight: genes close together on a chromosome are rarely separated by crossing over, while genes far apart are separated often. So the frequency with which two genes recombine measures the distance between them. Recombination frequency was a ruler for the chromosome, readable straight from breeding data.
Reading the Map
By computing recombination frequencies between many pairs of genes, Sturtevant arranged them in order along the chromosome, spacing them by their recombination distances — the first genetic linkage map. The unit of genetic distance, the centimorgan, honors Morgan. From one late night's insight grew the entire enterprise of mapping genomes by inheritance.
