Two Opposite Ways to Make Color

There are two fundamentally different color processes. A screen makes color by emitting light, adding red, green, and blue light together, which is why more light means brighter, and all colors combined make white. This is additive color. Ink makes color the opposite way. Ink does not emit light; it absorbs some of the light falling on it and reflects the rest, and the reflected part is the color you see. Because each ink subtracts (absorbs) some wavelengths, this is subtractive color, and it runs by contrary rules.

Why Combining Inks Darkens

Each pigment removes part of the spectrum from the light that hits it. Lay one ink over or into another and the two absorptions stack: the mixture absorbs everything the first ink absorbed plus everything the second does, so it reflects less light overall and appears darker. Keep adding different pigments and they collectively absorb across more and more of the spectrum, driving the mixture toward a muddy dark, in principle toward black. Where mixing light climbs toward white, mixing pigment sinks toward darkness. The two systems move in opposite directions.

Why You Cannot Just "Add" a Color

Subtractive behavior is why mixing a target spot color is a craft, not simple addition. You cannot brighten a mixture by adding another colored ink, every addition can only subtract more light and dull the result. Achieving a clean, vivid target requires starting from the right base and adding pigments judiciously, because each component narrows the reflected spectrum. This is also why some brilliant colors are impossible to mix from a standard set and must be bought as pre-formulated pigments: no combination of the inks you have can avoid absorbing the wavelengths that vividness requires.

Why Precision by Weight Matters So Much

Because each pigment's absorption is powerful and the mixture darkens with every addition, small errors in proportion shift the color significantly, and once too much of a darkening component is in, you cannot take it back out.
