Kickback: The Real Danger

Kickback is when the workpiece is suddenly seized by the blade and hurled back toward the operator at high speed, often faster than anyone can react, and it can also drag a hand into the blade. It is the leading cause of serious table saw injuries, more than accidental contact with an exposed blade. Kickback happens when the wood binds against or climbs the back of the spinning blade, where the teeth are moving upward and toward the operator, and the blade grabs it. Because it is sudden and forceful, kickback cannot be muscled through, it must be prevented, which is why understanding its causes matters more than reaction speed.

The Riving Knife and Splitter

The single most effective anti-kickback device is the riving knife (or splitter), a curved metal fin mounted just behind the blade, the same thickness as the cut. It sits in the kerf and keeps the freshly cut wood from closing on or twisting into the back of the blade, which stops the most common kickback mechanism at its source. A riving knife moves up and down with the blade and stays close behind it, making it especially effective; a splitter is a simpler fixed version. Using the saw with its riving knife in place, rather than removed for convenience, is one of the most important safety habits, it directly prevents the pinch that causes kickback.

Never Fence and Miter Gauge Together

A specific, dangerous mistake deserves its own warning: never use the rip fence and the miter gauge at the same time for a crosscut. When you crosscut with the miter gauge while the offcut end rests against the fence, the small cut-off piece becomes trapped between the fence and the spinning blade, and the blade grabs it and fires it back. For crosscuts, use the miter gauge alone with the fence well out of the way, or use a stop block clamped away from the blade; for rip cuts, use the fence alone. Combining them traps the offcut, which is a classic kickback trigger. Push sticks and blade guards further keep hands and wood controlled and away from the blade.
