A Digital Image Is Just a Grid of Pixels

The idea that an image "is 300 DPI" treats DPI as if it were baked into the file, when in fact it is a decision made at output time.
DPI Is a Ratio You Choose
DPI, dots (really pixels) per inch, only comes into being when you map the pixel grid onto a physical surface. Print the same pixel grid small, and many pixels crowd into each inch, giving a high DPI; print it large, and the pixels spread out, giving a low DPI. The identical file can be any DPI you like, depending purely on the print size you choose. The DPI Tag Red Herring
Image files often carry an embedded "DPI" or "resolution" tag, which fuels the confusion, but that tag is merely a suggestion for a default print size; it changes nothing about the actual pixels and is ignored entirely when the image is shown on a screen. Changing that tag without resampling does not add or remove a single pixel. This is why the common instruction to "set your image to 300 DPI" is meaningless without also specifying a size, the number floats free until anchored to physical inches.
What Actually Matters
Once you understand DPI as a print-time ratio, the real question becomes clear and simple: do you have enough pixels for the size you want to print at an acceptable density?
