Finding Hyperfocal Distance, Step by Step

  1. Note your focal length and aperture. For example, a 35mm lens at f/8.
  2. Note your camera's circle of confusion value. This is a sensor-size-dependent constant representing the largest acceptably sharp blur spot, typically a small fraction of a millimeter.
  3. Apply the hyperfocal distance formula. Hyperfocal distance = (focal length² ÷ (aperture × circle of confusion)) plus focal length.
  4. Focus at that distance. Everything from roughly half that distance to infinity will render acceptably sharp — useful for landscape shots where you want maximum depth of field without guessing.
