Why 300 DPI Is the Standard Reference

300 DPI is widely regarded as the sharpness threshold for prints viewed up close, like framed portraits or photo books - most modern cameras well exceed this requirement for typical print sizes, which is why megapixel count matters less than manufacturers' marketing sometimes suggests.

Large Prints Often Need Less DPI Than You'd Think

Large-format prints like posters or banners are typically viewed from a much greater distance, so they can often use a lower DPI - 150 or even 100 - without any visible quality loss, dramatically reducing the megapixel requirement compared to a same-sized print viewed up close.
