Why Crop Factor Matters for This Rule

Cropped sensors effectively magnify the field of view compared to a full-frame sensor at the same physical focal length, which also magnifies the visible effect of any camera shake - accounting for crop factor gives a more accurate minimum speed than using the lens's stated focal length alone.

Image Stabilization Changes the Math

Modern in-body or in-lens image stabilization can allow noticeably slower shutter speeds than this baseline rule while still producing sharp images, commonly extending usable handheld speeds by 2-5 stops depending on the system.
