The Long, Dangerous Reign of Lead
For an astonishingly long time, lead was a favorite pipe material, because it is soft, easy to shape, and resists corrosion, ideal properties for a plumber. The very word "plumbing" descends from the Latin for lead. But lead is also a potent toxin, and water sitting in lead pipes can slowly dissolve some of it. This danger was not fully reckoned with for centuries, and the legacy of old lead pipes and lead solder remains a serious concern in many older buildings today, a cautionary tale about a material chosen for workability over safety.
Iron and Its Rust
Iron and steel pipes offered strength and became widespread, but they carried their own problem: they corrode. Over years, the interior rusts and accumulates deposits, which not only roughen the pipe and choke the flow but can discolor the water with rust. Galvanizing, coating the iron with zinc, helped delay corrosion, but galvanized pipes still degrade internally over decades. Iron solved lead's toxicity but introduced rust and gradual restriction.

Copper: The Long-Standing Favorite
Copper became the trusted standard for much of modern plumbing: durable, resistant to corrosion, smooth-walled, and far safer than lead. It reliably carries clean water for decades. Its drawbacks are cost, which rises with the metal's price, and rigidity, which makes installation labor-intensive, requiring cutting and soldering of joints. For a long stretch of the twentieth century, copper was simply what good water pipe was made of.
The Plastic Revolution
The newest chapter is plastic, rigid PVC for drains and flexible cross-linked polyethylene for supply. These materials are inexpensive, do not corrode or leach the way metals can, and, in the case of flexible tubing, can be run in long snaking lengths with far fewer joints, dramatically speeding installation. They represent the current answer to the centuries-long search for a pipe that is cheap, safe, durable, and easy to install.
