Example
A 50-foot PEX run experiencing a 100°F temperature swing:
Expansion = 50 x (100/100) x 1.0 = ~50.00 inches
Why PEX Expands So Much More Than Copper
PEX pipe expands considerably more than rigid copper pipe under the same temperature change - this flexibility is actually an advantage for freeze resistance, but it means long straight PEX runs need loose support clips (not rigid fixed clamps) and occasional expansion loops to accommodate this movement without stressing joints.
When This Matters Most
This matters most for long horizontal runs in unconditioned spaces (attics, exterior walls) where seasonal or even daily temperature swings can be significant - shorter runs inside conditioned living space see far less practical expansion movement.
