Why Diameter Slightly Affects the Recommendation
Larger diameter pipes hold more water volume relative to their exposed surface area, giving them a small amount of natural resistance to rapid freezing compared to narrow pipes - but this effect is modest, which is why insulation thickness is still driven primarily by climate severity.
Location Matters as Much as Insulation Thickness
Pipes running through unheated spaces - attics, crawlspaces, exterior walls, and unheated garages - remain vulnerable to freezing even with adequate insulation if that space experiences prolonged sub-freezing temperatures, so relocating especially vulnerable runs is sometimes worth considering alongside insulation.
