Why Your Hair Won't Grow Forever

The hair growth calculator projects future length by adding steady monthly growth to your current length. In reality, hair does not simply grow indefinitely at a constant rate, and the reason some people can grow their hair to their waist while others struggle to get it past their shoulders has nothing to do with how fast it grows. It comes down to a hidden cycle that governs every hair on your head, and a personal limit called terminal length. Understanding this cycle explains both the calculator's usefulness and its limits.

Every Hair Lives on a Cycle

Each hair follicle on your scalp runs through a repeating cycle: a long phase of active growth, a brief transition, and a resting phase, after which the hair falls out and the follicle eventually starts a new hair. Crucially, the hairs on your head are not synchronized, they are at different points in the cycle at any given time, which is why you shed some hairs daily without going bald. Hair growth is not a steady, permanent process but a rotation of individual hairs through phases.

The Growth Phase Sets the Limit

The length your hair can reach is determined mainly by how long its active growth phase lasts, and this duration is largely set by your genetics. A hair grows only during its growth phase; once that phase ends, the hair stops lengthening, rests, and eventually falls out to be replaced by a new, short hair. So the maximum length any hair achieves is however much it grew during its personal growth phase before that phase ended. Longer growth phases allow longer hair; shorter ones cap it.

Terminal Length

This is why hair has a "terminal length", the maximum length it will reach for a given person, set by how long each hair grows before its phase ends and it is shed. Someone whose hairs enjoy a long growth phase can grow very long hair; someone with a shorter phase finds their hair reaches a certain length and seems to stop, because hairs are being shed and replaced at about the length where their growth phase runs out. It is not that the hair stopped growing, but that individual hairs reach the end of their cycle before getting longer.

Why the Projection Is a Rough Guide

The calculator's straight-line projection works reasonably for modest timeframes, where hairs are mostly still in their growth phase, but it cannot capture the cycle's ultimate limit. Extended far enough, its steady growth would predict lengths that a person's terminal length simply will not allow, since hairs are continually reaching the end of their phase and being shed. It also ignores trims. Read as a short-term estimate of raw growth, the calculator is handy; read as a promise of unlimited length, it collides with the biological cycle that ensures your hair, like everyone's, has a length it will not exceed.
