Why Group Photos Are Tricky
The inverse-square law has a vivid practical consequence: subjects at different distances from a flash receive very different amounts of light. In a group where some people stand close and others far, the near ones can be blindingly overexposed while the far ones are left dim, all from a single flash. The rapid falloff means the light simply cannot reach the back row with anything like the intensity it hits the front. This is why lighting a deep scene evenly with one flash is so difficult.
Using the Falloff Deliberately
Skilled photographers turn the law to their advantage. Because light dies off so quickly with distance, placing a flash close to a subject makes the background, being much farther from the flash, fall dramatically darker, an easy way to isolate a subject against a black backdrop. Conversely, bouncing flash off a wall or ceiling effectively moves the light source farther away and larger, softening it.
