Loft Is Trapped Air

The pleasant fluffiness, or "loft," of a comforter, pillow, or thick sweater is largely empty space. The fibers themselves occupy only a small fraction of the item's volume; the rest is air held between and within the fibers. This trapped air is what makes soft goods feel plump and warm, it insulates and gives them body, but it also makes them bulky. A puffy comforter is, by volume, mostly nothing at all. What the Vacuum Removes

A vacuum bag seals the item inside an airtight envelope, and then a vacuum sucks the air out. As the trapped air is drawn away, the fibers collapse together, and outside air pressure presses the now-airless bag flat. The item shrinks dramatically, not because its material has been crushed, but because the voluminous air that gave it loft has been evacuated. The fabric that remains is compact and dense, a slab where there was once a cloud. The magic is really just the removal of air.

The Limit of Compression

This explains why compression has a ceiling. You can only remove the air; you cannot remove the fabric itself. Once the air is gone and the fibers are pressed together, further shrinkage is impossible, the remaining volume is the actual material, which is incompressible in any practical sense. This is why airy, lofty items like comforters compress spectacularly, while dense items with little trapped air barely shrink at all.
