Moving Box Count Calculator
Estimating Boxes Before You've Packed a Single One
The most common moving-day miscalculation isn't underestimating truck size — it's running out of boxes on packing day, or buying far more than needed. This calculator starts from published industry ranges by home size, then adjusts for how much you actually own, giving both a realistic range and a specific breakdown by box size.
The Formula
Adjusted Range = Base Range × Belongings Multiplier
Recommended Estimate = Midpoint of Adjusted Range
The belongings multiplier shifts the estimate for how much you own relative to average: 0.85× for a light packer, 1.0× for average, and 1.25× for a heavy packer. The final estimate is then split into small (40%), medium (30%), large (20%), and extra-large/specialty (10%) boxes — a typical proportion for a mixed household move.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Buying the right box mix — most households need more small and medium boxes than large ones, since heavy items (books, dishes) go in smaller boxes for safe lifting.
- Booking a moving company — some movers price boxes separately, and knowing the count in advance avoids last-minute upcharges.
- DIY move budgeting — box costs scale directly with count, so a realistic estimate keeps a moving budget accurate.
- Timeline planning — a higher box count signals more packing time is needed before moving day.
| Home size | Range | Midpoint estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | 20–30 | 25 |
| 1 Bedroom | 30–40 | 35 |
| 2 Bedroom | 40–60 | 50 |
| 3 Bedroom | 60–80 | 70 |
| 4 Bedroom | 80–100 | 90 |
| 5+ Bedroom | 100–130 | 115 |
Ranges are industry rule-of-thumb estimates commonly published by moving and storage associations; a light packer multiplies these by 0.85, a heavy packer by 1.25.
